Abstract
This study explores dyadic interdependence on depression for older adults with cancer and their family caregivers. Cancer in the elderly has become an increasingly common problem in Korea. Over 50% of all malignancies occur in people aged 65 years or older. Cancer takes an emotional toll on patients and their family caregivers. Family caregivers¡¯distress levels are similar to patients with cancer. Actor-Partner Interdependence Model provides both conceptual logic and statistical techniques for parsing actor and partner effects. A total of 133 older adults with cancer and family caregivers dyads participated in two wave surveys in 2013 and 2015 by Hallym University Longitudinal Research Team on Quality of Life of the Elderly with Cancers. Paired t-test was used to identify changes and differences of the depression tendencies between T1 and T2 and structural equation was used to examine interdependence relationship. Results showed that while a significant change of depression level among older adults with cancer was found, there was no significant change among family caregivers. The depression of the older adults with cancer at T1 had significant effect of depression of family caregivers at T2. The results of this study revealed significant actor effects for depression leading from older adults with cancer to their family caregivers.
